Many have probably heard the word aromatherapy, and it is a word we also use freely. A form of therapy where you influence the body with the help of fragrance. It is through fragrance that we can influence the body and change our mood for the better. Aromatherapy is most often used to reduce stress, create better conditions for good sleep and can help with depression and burnout.
What research proves that we are influenced by scent?
Last year we came across a research study done here in Alnarp, think what fate that today we have our studio in the same area. The study is carried out in a rehabilitation garden just behind our studio. Here, SLU Alnarp has been able to research and come to the conclusion that fragrant plants such as geranium, lavender and conifers can have a positive effect on health.
It was found in the study that the scent of plants, especially different varieties of citrus-scented geranium, can support mental recovery and contribute to an experience of inner peace

What caught our attention most about this study was how several participants described that scents from greenhouses, soil, and grass brought back positive memories. The sense of smell acts as a link that brings happiness from childhood to the present. "It reminds me of when I was with my grandmother in her garden when I was a child , went there in the garden paths and her little greenhouse they had behind their little cottage and so , it was a very happy period as well", says a participant.
In most cases, these positive memories were connected specifically to mother and grandparents in the garden or forest and suddenly the participants were able to reconnect with the feeling of joy. Through the sense of smell, participants undergoing therapy or rehabilitation could use this link when they needed to lift their spirits.
But as strong as scent can bring positive memories to life, there were common scents among the participants that evoked stress and anxiety. It could be about synthetic scents, perfumes or the smell of hospitals. Even scents that signal danger, with smoke perhaps being the most common, created anxiety among participants.
Why do we use research?
When it comes to fragrance research, there is so much to sift through. We think it is our duty to find out that what we stand for is actually true. Because all of Remoair is based on changing with the power of scent. Below we refer to some of the research projects that we think are worth reading. Or you can just keep reading Remoair Magazine where a lot of facts are taken from these studies.
