145. GUIDE ⎯ How to use scent sticks

145. GUIDE ⎯ Så använder man doftpinnar
Part of our sustainability work is to always try to guide you so that you can get the most out of your product. A product that lasts a long time is a good choice in our opinion and something we strive for with every product we create. In this guide, we will help you how to best use scent sticks in the home.

What are scent sticks?

Shall we start by clarifying that when we write "fragrance sticks" it is the product itself, both oil and sticks, and when we write scent sticks we mean the sticks themselves. Using scented oil with sticks means that you get an even spread of scent over a longer period without having to "guard" the product as you need with scented candles. Good fragrance sticks mainly consist of a carrier oil that evaporates more easily in combination with fragrance oils. To make the scent sticks cheaper, there are many commercial brands that mix out the base and fragrance with alcohol, in some cases it is predominantly alcohol.

Do you want alcohol or not in scented sticks?

The simple answer is no. Ask yourself the question, do you want scent sticks that smell for a short period or a longer period? Pretty simple huh? You may be one of those who have tried new rituals at home, bought incense sticks and were happy for a few days that it smelled so good. But then the smell stops, usually within just a few days. In the vast majority of cases, this is because the base consisted of alcohol and now it has evaporated.
This is how you start a new kit with scent sticks
  • Choose a fragrance according to the place you will keep your sticks
  • Write off the cork to remove the protection, then write the cork back again.
  • Put the bottle in its place and keep children or pets out of reach
  • Place 3 sticks in the oil and let them stand for at least 12 hours
  • Feel if you want to change the scent strength, for increased effect, insert more sticks

Where in the home is it appropriate to have scent sticks?

Perhaps the biggest advantage of scent sticks in particular is that they fit well everywhere in the home. You don't have to light and extinguish a candle, but can instead enjoy an even spread of fragrance for a longer period. So be a little creative and put your scent sticks in places where you want to smell good all the time.

Can scent sticks be refilled?

Perhaps one of the smartest ideas is a product that can be refilled several times. With our refills, you can simply top up with oil and keep the same bottle over and over again. We recommend that you refill at regular intervals to keep the fragrance oil in the bottle fresh and invigorated. But you can also let it run out completely if, for example, you want to change the scent. When you buy refills for scent sticks, you get new sticks, so if you change the scent, it's time to change the scent sticks too.

How do I get rid of scent sticks?

Even if you buy environmentally friendly or organic fragrance sticks, you should be aware that you are handling a chemical product. Even you who believe that essential oil is biodegradable should know that in concentrated form it is poison for nature if it is handled in the wrong way. So NEVER rinse out a bottle that has had fragrance oil in it. It can be a bit fiddly to clean the bottles, but it's doable ⎯ you have to be patient.
Clean a bottle that has had fragrance oil in it
  • Make sure the needles have absorbed all they can first
  • Then place the bottle upside down on a plate or bowl with paper towels in it, leave it like that for two days
  • Then press paper towels into the bottle and stir with a grill stick or chopstick
  • Repeat the above step until the paper does not pick up any oil
  • Now you can rinse the bottle with lukewarm water and soap
Throwing incense sticks
  • Oil left in the bottle? Seal it and hand it in to a landfill/recycling station
  • No oil left in the bottle? Clean according to the first three steps above first, recycle as glass and the cork as metal
