You may read in more and more places about climate-neutral transport or climate-compensated products. Of course it sounds good ⎯ but do you really know how it works and what it actually means?
Climate compensation
Climate compensation means compensating for the climate impact you make "at home" and cannot avoid, with projects in developing countries where it is most cost-effective to do so.
In practice, this means that a project developer develops a project that reduces emissions or absorbs carbon dioxide compared to if the project had not been developed. One example is that they ensure that coal power is not built and build solar energy instead.
When the project begins to deliver climate benefits, the carbon dioxide that has been prevented from being emitted or absorbed from the atmosphere is measured. For every tonne of realized carbon dioxide reduction, a certificate is created ⎯ one tonne of climate compensation. The project developer sells these certificates to companies and organizations that wish to compensate for the climate, either directly or via resellers.
Climate neutral
That something is climate neutral means that calculations of all climate impacts have been carried out, reduction plans have been set up and everything has been climate compensated for. Climate neutrality can be achieved for activities, products or events, among other things. In order to be able to call your business or product climate neutral, you should follow the requirements set in one of the two standards that define climate neutrality: PAS 2060 and ISO 14021.
The requirements for climate neutrality in these standards are more far-reaching than just in a Climate Report . In a climate report, the scope is determined based on the needs of the business, where the only requirements are to follow the GHG protocol (ie requirements for reporting scope 1 and 2). Climate neutrality needs to include at least 95% of the operation's total greenhouse gas emissions in the report, among other things.
Remoair's climate policy
Since day 1, we at Remoair have always worked to keep track of our footprint. Since the start, we have been climate-compensated by calculating our climate footprint. This includes, among other things, our deliveries both to and from us. In our analysis, we have also factored in travel and energy consumption during production in our studio.
In 2021, we also launched a new part of our work ⎯ one tree planted per item sold. You can read more about it here →
