A scent of freshly baked panettone spreads as we trudge through the mingle at the Christmas market in Rothenburg. Someone is burning almonds, candied apples pass by and the scent of Christmas spices is all around us. Lamps, lanterns and string lights shimmer in the background.

Trim the wick

Every time before you light the candle, you should trim the wick to about 5 mm. By trimming the wick, the candle burns longer and more steadily.

Both the first time and after you light your candle, the wax should melt to the edge. After that, about 3-5 hours is long enough at a time.

Avoid drafts

Always place your candles on a flat surface and avoid ventilation and drafts. Never move a burning candle, this can cause the wick to bend.
