Our fragrances are made up of several different molecules that create a characteristic scent. To make it easier to understand the scent, it is divided into three parts that represent how the scent will behave. In the perfume world, it is known as the fragrance pyramid.
How is the fragrance pyramid built?
You divide the scents into categories, there is a whole wheel with scents and how they are categorized and in the pyramid there are three different variants. Top notes, heart notes and base notes. A fragrance can be characterized by different notes depending on how the fragrance was built. Most of the time, the pyramid always consists of these three parts, but as I said, it can vary which notes are dominant.
Think of the pyramid as a house, all three floors are there to balance each other. The different notes lift each other and create the character of a fragrance, this is called a chord.
What are top notes in a fragrance?
Light, volatile, healthy and fresh is often the description of top notes. In the category you will find citrus scents , green scents and fresh scents . Common examples are lemon , orange, bergamot, grapefruit, pink pepper, ginger, mint, sage and lavender. What makes a top note so special is that it doesn't last very long. In the perfume world, people say that it smells for about 5-20 minutes. For scented candles and scented sticks, it can be significantly longer, but in common is that it is usually the first thing you feel when you smell.
What are heart notes in a fragrance?
In the heart of a fragrance you find perhaps the most important notes. They take over after the top notes and also help to take advantage of the top notes. Not only that, you also want the heart notes of a fragrance to prepare one of the base notes. In the heart you usually find floral , fruity and spicy . Typical heart notes are rose, jasmine, freesia, plum, lemongrass, geranium, coriander and cardamom. Heart notes last a long time, as soon as the top notes disappear, you can enjoy the heart notes for several hours.
What is the base note in a fragrance?
Steady, slow and deep, that's exactly what the base note is in a fragrance. They rarely appear before you have had your scented candle running for a long time or smelled the scent for a longer period. Perfect scents in the base are gourmand scents , woody scents and musk . Gourmand are the scents that we often also eat, for example vanilla, tonka, brown sugar and cocoa. Among the woody scents you will find the obvious scents of cedar, sandalwood, bursera and pine. And when we talk about musk, it's classic musk, white musk and powdery notes.
What is the scent pyramid used for?
For us as fragrance creators, we use it to balance scents so that they fit into our range, that they don't float away from the thoughts we have. As a private person, you can use the scent pyramid to more easily find your way through the swamp of scents. We all have our preferences and with the pyramid you can more easily find what you already know you like.
What to look for in a fragrance?
A tricky thing is that top notes often trick you into a scent you might not really like at all. Since top notes are the first thing you feel in a fragrance, you sniff a little quickly and suddenly you think you've found a favorite.
Therefore, allow some time before choosing a fragrance. You can also read which chord the fragrance has and then look at the fragrance notes. This way you know which notes are dominant in the fragrance.
How are the Remoair collections structured?
We have divided our collections based on which notes we chose to focus on. For us, it's all about balance! No scents should lead to headaches and they should not take over the whole home and never go away.
The Core Collection is a tribute to top notes. Here the accords are healthy, there is a big focus on citrus fruits in different forms and balances. The fragrances in The Core Collection therefore have a greater proportion of top notes.
The Maison Collection highlights the heart notes more. The top notes disappear quite quickly and the base notes are not heavy or too complicated variants. This makes the collection more balanced and simple, suitable for most homes ⎯ hence the name.
In our collection The Hyper Contrary, we have focused on base notes. Our twist, however, is that we have chosen to balance the scents with unconventional tops. Although the collection pays tribute to base notes, this should not be misinterpreted as heavy fragrances.
Now we hope that you have gained meat on your legs so that in the future you can choose a fragrance with confidence!
