On site in the studio, we find an excited Martin who seems to have cracked a clever riddle or perhaps found gold ⎯ it was unclear at first which. But once inside comes a scent that is not quite recognisable, which is both pleasant and refreshing. Martin explains that it's the latest, you might think it's just a cheap citrus scent, but of course the explanation comes from what went on in the "lab".
In 2019 a collection called "VEGAN" was released which was 100% canola wax in brown glass jars with black lids. The candles were also equipped with crackling wooden wicks. The lights sold well and were much appreciated, but they were an experiment from the very beginning. So by the time Christmas passed they had sold out and there were no plans to reintroduce the wooden wick.
Then came the Remoair mosquito lights
If we fast-forward to the spring of 2022, it's full throttle to get the autumn and winter scents right, it's a period of a lot of testing. It is right now in this period that the idea of mosquito candles is raised when a mixture that should smell of lavender and orange does not turn out as intended. There are quite a few mosquito candles on the market already, but in true Remoair spirit, the question is asked ⎯ how durable is a mosquito candle?
After a month of research, it is clear that the prejudices will once again be shattered. Surely a mosquito candle doesn't have to smell like "fake citrus" to be effective? It also turns out that there are even better ways to get rid of mosquitoes and insects than turning to synthetic scents.
How to make a mosquito candle?
- Start by choosing a good wax that is kind to the planet, people and animals.
- Add only essential oils. There are several studies that have shown that lavender is one of the most effective oils. It also goes well with bergamot, orange blossom or eucalyptus.
- Choose a wick that spreads the scent really well and keep in mind that if the candle is going to be outside, you may need to go up a step or two so that the flame can withstand a bit of wind.
What is different from the classic mosquito lights?
As I said, it is not possible to use ordinary fragrance oils, but it is important that essential oils are included. But it is also important to look at the oils' content of p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD). The substance PDM is nature's own insect protection and has a wide spectrum when it comes to keeping the insects away. If you look at the commercial candles that claim to be "mosquito candles" today, only a few contain PDM.
Citrepel®
In the search for the perfect oils to keep mosquitoes away, we quickly realized that we already have the best options. Lavender, bergamot and eucalyptus are oils that we use in many of our candles already. During the research period, however, we ran across Citrepel® and immediately became curious.
Citrepel® is a mixture of essential oils that are specifically designed to protect against insects. Main ingredients are precisely p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD). So into the mixture with our other essential oils and voila, we have a highly effective mosquito candle (+ some other insects). Nobody could be happier than Martin when we also find out that Citrepel® is ECOCERT certified.
Remoair mosquito candles come in two variants
CRUSHED LAVENDER BLOSSOM + CEDARWOOD
Just as the name suggests, there is a high concentration of lavender in this candle. Balance makes the fragrance on a base of cedar wood.
FRESH CUT LEMONGRASS + EUCALYPTUS
This fragrance contains Citrepel® and therefore has an extra clear scent of citrus, lime and honey. The base consists of eucalyptus and together the scent is reminiscent of a cold bubbly glass of Sprite.
