043. Slow living ⎯ learn it, live it! We clarify the concept.

043. Slow living ⎯ learn it, live it! Vi reder ut begreppet.
Have you heard the term Slow living before? If not, you will surely run into it more and more in the future.

"Only that day dawns to which we are awake"

⎯ Henry David Thoreau

Natalie Walton writes in her book STILL that by adopting slow living at home, we can change the way we live and have a better and richer life. The Slow movement has its roots in mid-80s Rome. It was due to the opening of a fast-food chain in the middle of Piazza di Spagna that the counter-action got its first spark.
We wanted to learn more about Slow Living and of course made contact with Ellen Herrlin who owns, runs and inspires the store with the same name - Slow Living Home.

Tell us a little bit about what Slow Living is?

Slow Living is a lifestyle where, contrary to "fast living", you let everything take its time, you don't want to rush the natural process and you enjoy the beauty. It's about feeling good and actively distancing yourself from stress and being more conscious in your consumption.

Where does the term Slow Living come from?

The whole Slow movement came as a response to Fast food. So it started with Slow Food and since then the slow movement has been able to be adapted to almost all aspects of our lives, eg slow travel and slow fashion.

Can you come up with three tips on how to implement Slow Living in one's life?

Figure out what / who makes you happy in life and do more of this or spend more time with this person. Surround yourself with things that you value and feel good about and use, sell or donate things you don't use. Surrounding yourself with a lot of things, especially things you don't need or use, creates stress. Be more aware in your daily life, think ecologically and sustainably.

What is the main reason to have Slow Living as a lifestyle?

It's a lifestyle that is there to feel good and for your surroundings and the world around you to feel better, there are probably no better reasons to do something.

A big thank you to Marlene and Ellen for this short but full interview. It's just the beginning for us at Remoair and our journey towards a slow life!
